01What it does

What Nutley Family Service Bureau does

Mission

Nfsb's mission is to strengthen the social and emotional well-being of individuals and families through affordable mental health counseling and social service programs. Our vision is a community where mental well-being is an integral part of life.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Mental health counseling servicesnfsb operates a licensed outpatient mental health practice providing individual, family, and group psychotherapy, psychiatric evaluation, and medication management to clients of every age. Services are offered on a sliding-fee basis and through most major insurance plans, including medicaid, so that no one is turned away for inability to pay. In 2025, 22 clinical providers delivered 7,637 treatment sessions to 486 unduplicated clients. Clients came from 67 municipalities, and nearly a third were children and adolescents under 18. The bureau also delivers school-based mental health services in partnership with the nutley public schools, placing a licensed clinician in district buildings to provide on-site counseling and consultation to students and families.

  2. Thrift shopsnfsb operates community thrift shops that make clothing, housewares, and furniture available to area residents at minimal cost while diverting usable goods from the waste stream. The shops serve a direct charitable function alongside their retail role: merchandise is provided at no charge to food pantry and case management clients experiencing hardship, and the shops offer structured, supported volunteer placements for community members, including individuals with disabilities and youth completing service requirements. In 2025, 269 volunteers contributed 16,758 hours across 5,059 shifts to operate the shops. Net proceeds support the bureau's counseling, food, and case management programs.

  3. Nfsb case managers provide assessment, advocacy, benefits navigation, and referral services that help vulnerable residents, primarily older adults, remain safely and independently in their homes. Staff assist clients in applying for public benefits, securing and sustaining housing, utility, and food assistance, and connecting to medical, legal, and community resources, with ongoing follow-up to promote stability. In 2025 the program delivered 883 client contacts to 76 unduplicated clients, an average of 11.6 contacts each. The median client age was 73, and 56 of 76 clients were 65 or older. The program also encompasses the bureau's inclusive healthy communities initiative, which works to expand community participation and access for residents with disabilities.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 3 funders to 8 funders, grant income fell $132k → $114k.

5 of 21 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 15% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of NUTLEY FAMILY SERVICE BUREAU’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

NUTLEY FAMILY SERVICE BUREAU leans on a few funders — its largest provides 47% of grant income and the top three 72%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

89% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund NUTLEY FAMILY SERVICE BUREAU.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

40% of NUTLEY FAMILY SERVICE BUREAU's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 67% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $114k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
