01What it does

What New Public Inc does

Mission

The organization's mission is to ensure that every community has a healthy digital public space by helping local communities across america create more flourishing digital spaces and developing prototypes for digital conversation with public service media organizations.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Roundabout is a steward-led local community platform, designed to help neighbors connect and build healthy local digital spaces. In fy25, new_ public launched closed beta pilots in five u.s. Communities, spanning urban, suburban, and rural contexts and representing a combined population of roughly 200,000 residents. Roundabout recruited stewards with deep local ties, and built and shipped an mvp app in six months with a small, focused team. Early results exceeded benchmarks for returning members, original content, and no harassment or spam.

  2. Public spaces incubator (psi) is an international consortium of public service media organizations representing over 80 million monthly users across five countries collaborating with new_ public to design tools and practices for healthier online dialogue. In fy25, psi welcomed german broadcaster ard and deepened cbc/radio-canada's participation, added open-source contributors, and expanded tools for moderation, audience participation, and editorial workflows. Psi's influence helped establish public conversation as a core legal responsibility of public service media in germany.

  3. Research and explorations is new_ public's effort to identify and support the next generation of digital public space products and the entrepreneurs who will build them. In fy25, the program established its foundational focus on two tracks: deepening research in areas of highest promise and developing programming to support external entrepreneurs building in the public interest. The work reflects new_ public's core belief that a healthier digital public life will require many different steward-led spaces operating across diverse communities and contexts.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

5 of 17 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 32% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of NEW PUBLIC INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

NEW PUBLIC INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 21% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

33% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund NEW PUBLIC INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.6M arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
