01What it does

What National Association for the Advancement of Colored People-Group does

Mission

To achieve equity, political rights, and social inclusion by advancing policies and practices that expand human and civil rights, eliminate discrimination, and accelerate the well-being, education, and economic security of black people and all persons of color.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. The naacp network of activists is strong. Through our units, we are in community meetings and boardrooms, college campuses, capitol hill and statehouses, advocating to build black political, social, and economic power to end racial injustice and making sure federal policies reflect the diverse voices they impact. Our units are doing the work on a local, state and regional level, powering the movement for change in the following areas: 1. Race & justice - structural discrimination and unjust policing, prosecution, and incarceration practices unfairly impact black communities. 2. Health & well-being - black health matters, and our work on behalf of families has never been more urgent. (continued on schedule o)3. Inclusive economy - economic equity is crucial to racial equity. An inclusive economy means everyone can contribute and earn with fair access to resources and opportunity. 4. Advocacy & litigation - the path to justice requires that we challenge federal, state, and local laws, statutes, and policies to ensure equal protection. Our units are shaping the next generation of activists, and we invest in them with training, fellowship, and scholarships.

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $4k → $77k.

2 of 12 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 59% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $18k from 2 payers (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Prisma Health). These are real filings, and they are not money NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE-GROUP raised.

Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE-GROUP leans on a few funders — its largest provides 58% of grant income and the top three 85%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE-GROUP.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $390k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
