01What it does

What Montlake Futures Fund does

Mission

Montlake futures develops name, image, and likeness opportunities that benefit the missions of 501(c)(3) organizations and provide educational experiences for university of washington student-athletes. Our goal is to leverage the roles and identities of student-athletes to help fundraise, generate awareness, and otherwise support charitable causes, while fostering connections that inspire a lifetime of civic engagement for student-athletes.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

On its FY2024 return the organization reported a significant change in how it conducts a program.

The house v. Ncaa settlement, which allows schools to directly compensate student athletes for their name, image, and likeness (nil), officially took effect on july 1, 2025. While approved on june 6, 2025, the implementation of revenue sharing and new roster rules begins for the 2025-26 academic year on this date. In accordance with the house v. Ncaa settlement, montlake future funds ceased engaging with student athletes on the last day of its fiscal year, june 30, 2025.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).

  1. Our primary program is purchasing the name, image, and likeness rights of student-athletes and allocating those rights to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations for the purpose of benefitting their missions. Program expenses enabled work to fundraise, generate awareness, and otherwise support organizations such as seattle children's hospital and boys and girls club of king county.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

9 of 11 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of MONTLAKE FUTURES FUND’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MONTLAKE FUTURES FUND leans on a few funders — its largest provides 60% of grant income and the top three 92%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MONTLAKE FUTURES FUND.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

100% of MONTLAKE FUTURES FUND's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $4k that is directly attributable, 99% of it comes from Washington funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.3M arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
