01What it does

What Model Alliance Inc does

Mission

Through strategic research, policy initiatives, and campaigns, the model alliance aims to promote fair treatment, equal opportunity, and more sustainable practices in the fashion industry, from the runway to the factory floor.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Through our secure support line, the model alliance assisted 272 people who work or aspire to work in the fashion industry with a range of concerns, including exploitative contracts, wage theft, and sexual abuse. When appropriate, we connected individuals with trusted journalists to help them tell their stories and made referrals to attorneys to explore their legal options. We championed and implemented the new york state fashion workers act, our signature legislation, held awareness-raising events and published an in-depth explainer to help models understand their newfound rights and how to exercise them. At eight speaking engagements, from a convening at the united nations to a panel conversation at the ford foundation, we educated our community and the general public about our efforts to create a fairer and more accountable fashion industry. We conducted research examining the impact of artificial intelligence on fashion workers in partnership with the worker institute at cornell university and data & society, and raised awareness for our community's concerns about the growing use of ai-generated models in major media outlets, including the new york times, business of fashion,…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $75k → $227k.

4 of 13 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 32% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of MODEL ALLIANCE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 12 of 13 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MODEL ALLIANCE INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 38% of grant income and the top three 79%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

71% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MODEL ALLIANCE INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 100% · 2020 93% · 2021 100% · 2022 79% · 2023 66% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $235k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
