01What it does

What Magical Creatures of Hamakua - Animal Rescue and Sanctuary does

Mission

Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and offer lifelong sanctuary to animals on the Big Island while serving the Hawaiian community with programs that promote kindness, compassion, and stewardship. Magical Creatures Sanctuary provides lifelong care to the animals we rescue.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Program 1: Sanctuary & Animal Care: Magical Creatures Sanctuary provides lifelong sanctuary, individualized care, and rehabilitation for rescued farmed animals in need. In 2025, the organization cared for more than 100 resident animals, including goats, sheep, pigs, cows, chickens, and other farmed animals, many of whom are elderly, disabled, orphaned, or survivors of neglect, abandonment, injury, or medical hardship. The sanctuary provided daily feeding, safe housing, enrichment, hoof care, medication, veterinary treatment, and specialized support as needed. A significant part of the sanctuary's work involves animals with complex medical or mobility needs, including residents who require prosthetics, braces, wheelchairs, wound care, chronic-condition management, or long-term rehabilitation. The sanctuary also responded to community inquiries from individuals seeking guidance and support for farmed animal care, helping fill a gap in services for non-companion animals in Hawaii. The sanctuary remains the heart of the organization, and its education and outreach programs are rooted in the care and stories of its residents.

  2. Program 2: Internship & Volunteer Program Magical Creatures Sanctuary's on-site internship and volunteer program provides immersive, hands-on education in farmed animal care, sanctuary operations, nonprofit service, and compassionate stewardship. In 2025, interns and volunteers supported the sanctuary's daily operations by assisting with feeding, cleaning, enrichment, animal observation, basic care routines, facility maintenance, administrative tasks, social media support, and donor and sponsor engagement. The internship program typically hosts several full-time interns at a time who live communally at the sanctuary and participate directly in the daily rhythm of animal care. Many participants are students or early-career individuals interested in veterinary medicine, animal welfare, nonprofit work, or compassionate living. The program includes education about farmed animal behavior, individualized care, ethical relationships with animals, and the sanctuary's plant-based values.

  3. Program 3: Outreach & Education: Magical Creatures Sanctuary provides public education and community outreach to increase compassion for farmed animals and promote responsible stewardship. In 2025, the organization continued to welcome visitors through educational sanctuary tours and private visits, sharing the individual stories of rescued animals and helping community members better understand the needs, personalities, and experiences of farmed animals. The sanctuary also engaged the public through educational events, tabling, social media storytelling, donor communications, and community conversations about animal care and compassion. These efforts helped connect supporters, students, volunteers, and community members with the sanctuary's mission. Outreach and education remained closely tied to the sanctuary's residents, using real-life examples of rescue, rehabilitation, disability support, aging, trust-building, and lifelong care to encourage empathy and more compassionate choices.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 4 funders, grant income rose $3k → $16k.

4 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 77% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of MAGICAL CREATURES OF HAMAKUA - ANIMAL RESCUE AND SANCTUARY’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MAGICAL CREATURES OF HAMAKUA - ANIMAL RESCUE AND SANCTUARY has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 24% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

80% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MAGICAL CREATURES OF HAMAKUA - ANIMAL RESCUE AND SANCTUARY.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 95% · 2021 100% · 2022 82% · 2023 62% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $31k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
