01What it does

What Aloha Animal Sanctuary does

Mission

Aloha Animal Sanctuary's purpose is to prevent cruelty toward animals, provide sanctuary to neglected, abandoned and / or abused animals, and to promote compassion toward these animals through public engagement and education.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Program

  1. In 2024, Aloha Animal Sanctuary, still an entirely volunteer-run organization, continued to provide sanctuary for neglected, abused, and/or abandoned animals and promote compassion towards these animals through public engagement and education and achieved notable accomplishments. The sanctuary successfully rescued several abandoned animals and continued caring for 43 animal residents, including various species, while ensuring their well-being and happiness. In 2024, the sanctuary closed the year with 123 active volunteers and continued the work-trade program. The impact on the lives of rescued animals, volunteers, and the broader community reflects the sanctuarys commitment to creating a more compassionate and sustainable world for all.Educational events and visitor days continued in 2024 for most of the year. The bird flu arrived on the island late in the year and we stopped visitor and public volunteer days in November 2024 to keep our residents as safe as possible. Educational and visitor days focus on fostering a deeper understanding of farmed animals and humane treatment to the broader community and those who visited the sanctuary. Events included Visitor Days connected with…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base held at 2 funders, grant income fell $35k → $8k.

2 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 34% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Aloha Animal Sanctuary’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Aloha Animal Sanctuary leans on a few funders — its largest provides 30% of grant income and the top three 85%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

64% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Aloha Animal Sanctuary.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 71% · 2020 51% · 2021 93% · 2022 80% · 2023 91% — growing more concentrated.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $28k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
