What Legal Outreach Inc does

Mission

Legal outreach is a college preparatory organization that uses instruction in law as a catalyst for inspiring and motivating youth from under-resourced communities in new york city to strive for academic excellence and higher education. The organization changes the educational trajectory of urban youth by implementing a series of legal and educational programs that foster vision, develop skills, instill values and enhance confidence among program participants.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Within the college bound program, we continue to implement our school-year academic advisory program, writing program, con law debate program, mentoring program, professional training program, professional exposure program, parent support program, college admissions program, transition-to-college, and civic engagement and social justice program. We finished the 2024-25 school year with 216 students in the program (65 freshmen, 56 sophomores, 52 juniors, and 39 seniors). Our retention rate for the year was thus 96%. We successfully implemented all elements of the multi-faceted program including the: 1) academic support center; 2) study and life skills program; 3) mentoring program; 4) constitutional law debate program; 5) parent support program; 6) saturday writing program; 7) college admissions program, 8) transition to college program, 9) college support program for our college freshmen. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 9 funders to 32 funders, grant income rose $391k → $1.3M.

16 of 65 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 18% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of LEGAL OUTREACH INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 65 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

LEGAL OUTREACH INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 18% of grant income, and it takes 7 funders to reach half.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.4M arriving through sponsors registered in 10 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
