01What it does

What KIPP Inc dba Knowledge is Power Program Inc does

Mission

KIPP, the Knowledge Is Power Program, is committed to developing in underserved students the academic skills, intellectual habits, and qualities of character necessary to succeed at all levels of pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, college, and the competitive world beyond.

As stated on its FY2018 Form 990.

Program

KIPP Houston's mission: To build a better tomorrow, we educate our students with the academic and character skills necessary to thrive in college and lead choice-filled lives. KIPP began in 1994 with a powerful idea: to create a classroom that helped children develop the knowledge, skills, character, and habits necessary to succeed in college and build a better tomorrow for their communities. Founders Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin began by redefining what was possible for a classroom of public school students in Houston. Essential to creating a great system of schools is having our eyes on the same goal: college graduation. At KIPP Houston, teachers, leaders, students, and parents are all united around this goal. By providing outstanding educators, more time in school learning, and a strong culture of achievement, KIPP Houston is helping students build the skills needed to make it not only to, but through, college. During the 2017-18 school year, approximately 13,600 students were enrolled in grades pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. KIPP Houston operated 10 primary schools, 12 middle schools and 4 high schools. The students that KIPP Houston serves are predominantly minorities…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base narrowed from 30 funders to 3 funders, grant income fell $7.6M → $4.8M.

13 of 45 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 8% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $15M from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest KIPP Texas Future Fund). These are real filings, and they are not money KIPP Inc dba Knowledge is Power Program Inc raised.

Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

KIPP Inc dba Knowledge is Power Program Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 79% of grant income and the top three 94%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

88% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund KIPP Inc dba Knowledge is Power Program Inc.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $4.3M arriving through sponsors registered in 10 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
