01What it does

What Kentucky Entrepreneurship Education Network Inc does

Mission

Keenstart was created to run the governor's school for entrepreneurs which includes interrelated high school, college, and alumni programs. We teach and empower kentucky's future innovators with lifelong entrepreneurial skills.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. During gse's summer startup, teams of high school students develop a business model, a prototype, and pitch their company to a large audience. Students learn a great deal about themselves and others as they live in a community, developing long-lasting connections and skills. Educators, business leaders, experienced entrepreneurs, and other mentors work closely with the students in experiential, hands-on learning sessions, and co-curricular activities. Students learn what it takes to create a successful company and are eligible for millions of dollars in college scholarships. They also learn from collegiate pitch alums and are introduced to collegiate pitch as a next step in their entrepreneurial journey.

  2. Gse's collegiate pitch program is kentucky's largest intercollegiate pitch competition and provides access to thousands of dollars in funding, along with valuable feedback from entrepreneurial experts. The competition encourages innovation and entrepreneurship by providing opportunities for students to develop and pursue their business ideas. The contest rewards businesses judged to be the most likely to produce successful ventures that create jobs for kentuckians. Collegiate pitch is part of the summer startup curriculum, as those high school students visit collegiate pitch businesses, learn from collegiate pitch participants, and are encouraged to apply to collegiate pitch and the opportunities it offers for their ongoing business development.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base narrowed from 3 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $30k → $36.

3 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 9% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of KENTUCKY ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION NETWORK INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

KENTUCKY ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION NETWORK INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 68% of grant income and the top three 91%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

32% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund KENTUCKY ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION NETWORK INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $15k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
