01What it does

What Kachemak Heritage Land Trust Inc does

Mission

Kachemak heritage land trust (khlt) is a nationally accredited non-profit organization formed in 1989 for the purpose of conserving the natural heritage of the kenai peninsula for future generations.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. LAND: Kachemak Heritage Land Trust proactively contacts landowners in priority areas to gauge interest in conservation projects. In addition, KHLT responds to and evaluates opportunities presented for conservation. KHLT works with partners to foster conservation projects, holds conservation easements and owns land for conservation purposes. KHLT is responsible for permanent preservation of land, which requires highly trained staff and sufficient funds to succeed, including defense of conservation easements when necessary.

  2. Stewardship: Once KHLT preserves land through conservation easement or by outright ownership, KHLT becomes perpetually responsible to ensure the conservation purposes for protecting the property are followed. This perpetual responsibility requires highly trained staff with proper equipment and the funds needed to sustain this work, including the funds necessary to defend the conservation values in court if needed. KHLT at least annually monitors property under its care and addresses violations of the conservation restrictions when necessary.

  3. Community outreach: khlt conducts community outreach through multiple means, including social media, our website, public speaking engagements, one-on-one conversations and at community meetings. Khlt provides our kenai peninsula community with information and access to conservation tools designed to meet their needs, as well as includes community members in our stewardship responsibilities in permanently caring for land for which we are responsible. Much of our work is done in deep partnership with other organizations, including governmental bodies and agencies, including our baby salmon live here sign outreach program, our king maker program where we award good salmon stewards, and our fish need land too program co-hosted by kachemak bay national estuarine research reserve.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base narrowed from 3 funders to 2 funders, grant income fell $33k → $20k.

5 of 15 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 34% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of KACHEMAK HERITAGE LAND TRUST INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

KACHEMAK HERITAGE LAND TRUST INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 19% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

62% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund KACHEMAK HERITAGE LAND TRUST INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration.
