01What it does

What Hope 4 Horses Rescue and Sanctuary does

Mission

Rescue, Rehabilitate, train and try to adopt horses out that are healthy to permanent homes. We bring in horses that are seized by the counties within our state of Illinois, we take in owner surrenders when folks cannnot care and feed for the horses, we save horses from being slaughtered. Most horses come in very poor condition. First we will have them fully vetted, then get them healthy and when they are healthy we will retrain the horses and work with them so they trust again. We then provide them to families to be adopted. We have all volunteers that help us with this process.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. We rescue the horses that are in need of help. Refeeding program is most important to our program and most horses come in neglected, starved and severely underweight. This past year we adopted out over 17 horses and donkeys

    $46,736 spent
    61% of program spending
  2. All animals have to be properly vetted. This requires initial and annual vaccines. Male horses and donkeys have to be casterated. There are animals that need ongoing medical care and medicine due to health issues. Those are mostly the animals that will stay forever within our sanctuary. We must provide proper medical care to be able to adopt the animals and ensure horses get and remain healthy

    $14,207 spent
    19% of program spending
  3. Proper care and maintenance of the animals hooves are essential to reaching the goal to have the animal healthy. There are horses we have that have foundered and have ring bone so they have to remain on a strict schedule of having their hooves cared for; trimmed and shoes. Some need special maintenance and supplements for their hooves. This expense in this section covers the cost of the ferrier along with training of horses

    $1,897 spent
    2% of program spending
  4. Other program services are for fly control, supplies from farm stores such as water buckets, feed pans, heated water buckets, water troughs, pitch forks, fuel for tractor, miscellaneous training for horses, wheelbarrels, hoses items for the day to day operations and functions within the rescue

    $13,451 spent
    18% of program spending

The 4 programs described on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ. Program spending in total: $76,291.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 4 funders, grant income rose $6k → $13k.

3 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 88% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of HOPE 4 HORSES RESCUE AND SANCTUARY’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

HOPE 4 HORSES RESCUE AND SANCTUARY leans on a few funders — its largest provides 66% of grant income and the top three 97%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

88% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund HOPE 4 HORSES RESCUE AND SANCTUARY.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 98% · 2021 100% · 2022 96% · 2023 77% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

88% of HOPE 4 HORSES RESCUE AND SANCTUARY's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $6k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Illinois, across 2 states.

MO

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $47k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
