01What it does

What Hollywood Police Activities League does

Mission

Hollywood pal drives positive change in the community we serve by partnering with lapd and school-aged youth in programs that celebrate diversity, equity, and inclusion and inspire personal excellence, social awareness, and civic engagement. We create opportunities for officer and volunteer led sports, academics and enrichment programs for youth to provide impactful opportunities for personal growth and development.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Hollywood pal martial arts trains children (grades k - 12) in the art of judo, jiu jitsu, tae kwon do, karate and mixed martial arts under the supervision of professional instructors and an lapd pal officer, participants are provided classes based on age group or belt levels which are offered up to 5 days a week. Additionally, they participate in local and national tournaments throughout the year.

  2. An lapd pal officer manages the program and volunteers. Team placement and league play encourages healthy relationships and sportsmanship. Players practice with teams and play competitive seasons of soccer and travel tournaments. Soccer develops more than the athletic skills needed to play. It develops strong friendships, teaches leadership, socialization and helps build self-confidence for every child. Volunteer coaches and pal officers mentor and serve as positive role models for youth and their families.

  3. Enrichment programs empower youth with essential life skills, academic support, and personal growth opportunities. The girl scouts program builds leadership and confidence, while tutoring services boost literacy and academic performance. Through mentoring, youth gain positive role models, enhancing self-esteem and decision-making. Taste of the arts introduces youth to the visual and performing arts, fostering creativity, while opioid prevention programs educate youth on healthy choices. Scholarships ease financial barriers to higher education, and life beyond pal provides job readiness and life skills training. Each program fosters development, resilience, and long-term success for hollywood pal youth.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 7 funders, grant income rose $65k → $172k.

5 of 18 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 7% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $28k from 2 payers (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation). These are real filings, and they are not money HOLLYWOOD POLICE ACTIVITIES LEAGUE raised.

From the IRS filings of HOLLYWOOD POLICE ACTIVITIES LEAGUE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 17 of 18 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

HOLLYWOOD POLICE ACTIVITIES LEAGUE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 52% of grant income and the top three 88%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

95% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund HOLLYWOOD POLICE ACTIVITIES LEAGUE.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

33% of HOLLYWOOD POLICE ACTIVITIES LEAGUE's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 44% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $82k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
