01What it does

What Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy does

Mission

Founded in 1995 to coordinate the completion of the great allegheny passage, a 150-mile non-motorized path connecting pittsburgh and cumberland, maryland, the Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy promotes the great allegheny passage and coordinates, strengthens, and supports the efforts of allied trail partners to ensure a high-quality experience for all those who enjoy it.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. The Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy (conservancy) (formerly the allegheny trail alliance) promoted the 150-mile great allegheny passage (gap) by producing and distributing maps, brochures and trailguide:the official guide to traveling the c&o canal towpath and great allegheny passage; maintained www.gaptrail.org; fielded thousands of inquiries from potential travelers to the gap, and executed a multichannel marketing strategy to attract new and returning travelers. It made grants to local volunteer groups to enhance the gap or address maintenance emergencies that threatened to close it. The conservancy recruited and deployed volunteers to gather trail use patterns along the gap, and analyzed and published that data. It amplified the work of multiple owners and volunteer groups along the entire gap, and promoted the services and attractions available to tourists.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 4 funders, grant income rose $20k → $40k.

6 of 13 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 17% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of GREAT ALLEGHENY PASSAGE CONSERVANCY’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

GREAT ALLEGHENY PASSAGE CONSERVANCY leans on a few funders — its largest provides 48% of grant income and the top three 85%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

52% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GREAT ALLEGHENY PASSAGE CONSERVANCY.

How long its funders stay

33% of GREAT ALLEGHENY PASSAGE CONSERVANCY's funders are still giving 2 years after their first grant; 38% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $108k arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
