What Garden School Inc does

Mission

Garden school, in the independent tradition, affirms the primacy of learning. We empower every student in our educationally diverse community to responsibly meet the challenges of everyday life by promoting academic achievement, personal development and social involvement. We further believe that by recognizing each student's individual identity, garden school fosters the self-worth necessary to succeed.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Instructional - see schedule ogarden school is a nursery through twelfth grade independent school with a rigorous academic curriculum and an enrollment of approximately 250 students. All children are uniquely talented and have their own learning styles, so we combine time-tested teaching methods with creative approaches to reach out to all of our learners through a flexible teaching philosophy that is only possible with small class sizes. Our students evolve into readers, writers, and critical thinkers. They gain a deep understanding in math and the sciences. They become speakers of a second (and sometimes even a third) language. They acquire sophisticated eyes and ears for the arts, and they learn the value of helping others and taking care of themselves, as well as the balance required for both.

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 8 funders, grant income rose $2k → $161k.

4 of 13 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 44% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of GARDEN SCHOOL INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

GARDEN SCHOOL INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 34% of grant income and the top three 72%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

44% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GARDEN SCHOOL INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

40% of GARDEN SCHOOL INC's funders are still giving 2 years after their first grant; 62% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $129k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
