Programs

  1. Finished the construction of the Lapham Lodge a 5000 square foot building to be enjoyed year round. It is heated and placed next to the ski trail making it very convenient in the winter but it is also air conditioned and a great place to gather in the summer. It is reservable for events such as weddings and hence is a source of income for the WI park system. Building the lodge was a multi-year project. In the previous years we had put $1,622,099 of equity into the building and this year we added another $1,276,732 making the total value of lodge $2,898,831. The lodge was given to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for use by the general public and hence is no longer an asset of this non-profit the Friends of Lapham Peak Unit. While the building is now owned by the state of WI the Friends group has an agreement to maintain it for 5 years and retains a fund of about $200,000 to do so.

  2. The snowmaking program provides man-made snow on ski trails for cross country skiing hiking and snowshoeing. Snowmaking this past year provided a thick layer of man-made snow on approximately 2.4 kilometers of trails. The trails were groomed regularly from december through march resulting in 90 days of skiing on man-made snow compared to only 42 days of skiing on other trails with natural snow and marginal conditions. This project benefits more than 300,000 visitors to the park annually for their recreation. Work is in progress to both better maintain and to expand the trails.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

8 of 12 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 92% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Friends of Lapham Peak Unit Kettle Moraine State Forest’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Friends of Lapham Peak Unit Kettle Moraine State Forest leans on a few funders — its largest provides 46% of grant income and the top three 73%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

98% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Friends of Lapham Peak Unit Kettle Moraine State Forest.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $168k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
