01What it does

What Friends of Hardin County Animal Shelter Inc does

Mission

Professional veterinary care for shelter animals.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Professional veterinary care: provides financial support for a full time veterinarian at the hardin county shelter. This public/private agreement assurers routine and emergent vet care as well as spay/neuter services for each shelter animal.

    $20,000 spent
    24% of program spending
  2. Spay/neuter assistance: fohcas provides the means and financial support for low cost (or no cost) spay/neuter procedures for hardin county residents, as well as surrounting counties, who do not have the resources to provide these basic services for their cats and dogs. This program also includes vaccinations and microchipping. Fohcas provided additional services at a new site to better provide for the spay/neuter demand and address the underserved geographical needs. For the year fohcas provided 535 low cost spay/neuter procedures.

    $40,468 spent
    48% of program spending
  3. Return to field program: fohcas provides complete support for the hardin county's animal shelter "return to field" program. This program traps stray cats (colony cats) and provides either spay or neuter services, vaccinations, flea and tick preventative and ear tips for each cat's ears for each cat trapped. After the cat has recovered, they are returned to their original colony location. Additionally, this service was expanded to the larue county area, a largely underserved area for feral cat population control. The projected outcome of both these programs is to decrease the overall population of stray cats in hardin and larue counties. In calendar year 2024 the program spay or neutered 275 cats.

    $14,632 spent
    18% of program spending
  4. Diagnostic services: fohcas provided diagnostic services (radiology services) for multiple shelter resident cats and dogs during the year. These services are not available at the shelter and were needed for the proper care of the animals.

    $1,142 spent
    1% of program spending
  5. Springhaven domestic abuse shelter: this year fohcas has partnered with our local domestic abuse shelter (springhaven) to provide those residents with either dogs or cats a safe haven for their animals while staying at the facility. While still in its infancy, fohcas hopes to grow this program so abuse victims can leave their abusive situation, move into springhaven and not have to worry about their animals.

    $4,500 spent
    5% of program spending
  6. Hardin county animal care and control: this past year fohcas provided operational assistance to the hardin county animal care and control by providing commercial grade washer and dryer to clean the various towels, linens, etc. Needed for day-to-day operations of the shelter.

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income fell $10k → $838.

3 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 55% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of FRIENDS OF HARDIN COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

FRIENDS OF HARDIN COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 39% of grant income and the top three 88%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

96% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund FRIENDS OF HARDIN COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER INC.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $38k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
