01What it does

What Ferret Association of Connecticut Inc does

Mission

The Ferret Association of Connecticut focuses on the welfare of domestic ferrets. To improve their lives, we provide factual information to caretakers, advocate for their protection and safe treatment, operate a species-specific shelter for ferrets lost or abandoned, work to identify, contact, and accept ferrets released from medical research facilities, and provide technical support for other organizations sheltering domestic ferrets.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2025 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.

The Ferret Association initiated and managed a coordinated effort to rescue 62 ferrets from a breeder in Manitoba Province, Canada, who was being investigated by provincial authorities for inhumane practices. Working closely with the Manitoba Ferret Association (Winnipeg, Canada), we were able to help these animals obtain vaccinations, be spay/neutered, and distribute them to 9 different ferret shelters (including ours) both in Canada and the U.S.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 2).

  1. Shelter services: Dedicated shelter for lost or abandoned domestic ferrets; permanent Foster care of ill/elderly animals. In 2025, 46 animals were accepted into the shelter. 13 were surrendered directly from southern New England owners unable/unwilling to provide care. 3 had been abandoned outdoors; 2 were transferred in from Animal Control. 22 were released from medical research facilities. 6 animals came directly to our shelter from the 62 total rescued from a breeder in Canada. Disbursement: 7 animals were transferred to partner shelters. 29 were adopted into carefully-screened new homes and 7 were placed into permanent Foster care. An average of 18.4 animals were cared for in 2025 under this unique program, which places animals unlikely to be adopted due to age or illness into a screened volunteer home, where they live for the rest of their lives and are financially supported by the organization. As of December 31, 2025, the Ferret Association has cared for 2,431 ferrets over the course of our 35-year history.

Inquiries are generated via our website, Facebook, and phone. Our Facebook page has over 5,000 followers across 10 countries. 5 issues per year of an informational newsletter, Paw Printz, is printed & published.

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base narrowed from 4 funders to 2 funders, grant income fell $14k → $1k.

2 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 77% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of FERRET ASSOCIATION OF CONNECTICUT INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

FERRET ASSOCIATION OF CONNECTICUT INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 71% of grant income and the top three 92%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

90% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund FERRET ASSOCIATION OF CONNECTICUT INC.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $48k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
