What Families USA Foundation Inc does
Mission
Our vision is a nation where the best health and health care are equally accessible and affordable to all.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
Value & system transformation - families usa's new center for affordable whole person care marks a pivotal moment in the health care value movement: an unequivocal declaration that a just system of health care is contingent on redesigning economic incentives to serve the interests of people. This underlies our commitment to holding the health care industry accountable for delivering affordable, equitable, high-quality health care and health that all people living in our nation deserve.our work through the center will focus on three overarching principles:1. State and federal policies should reform the economic incentives of the health care system to ensure business interests are only achieved when consumer interests are.2. A powerful, unified national consumer-led movement is essential to ensuring policymakers enact meaningful policy changes that uproot the fundamental economic distortions in health care payment and delivery that drive unaffordable and inequitable low-quality care.3. Health care payment and delivery must be reoriented to deliver whole-person, holistic health.

The coalition has an informal membership of over 600 organizations with a shared commitment to ensure that all americans have equal access to high-quality, affordable health care.for more than two decades, the members of the medicaid coalition have worked to protect medicaid from ongoing legislative and administrative threats, expand the program to cover more low-income people, and improve it so that it is fiscally strong and able to deliver the highest quality of care to as many people as possible over the long-term.the diverse and influential membership presently includes organizations representing: seniors, women, children, families; disease and disability organizations; health providers; hospitals and community health centers; communities of color; faith-based communities; anti-poverty groups; labor and many other multi-issue advocacy organizations.
$1,419,873 spent25% of program spendingHealth & vaccination equity - one of families usa's most important social justice missions is building a nation where no one faces barriers to a healthy life because of who they are or where they live. To achieve this goal, we are working with a highly diverse coalition of partners, including people of color, people with disabilities, rural communities, ethnic communities, and others to create a policy agenda to address inequities. We also are increasingly focused on addressing the social determinants of health by exploring upstream approaches, such as those employing community health worker models that protect and improve health, thereby preventing the need for medical care.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2017 to 2018, from $35M to $30M (−14%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2020 10% · 2021 6%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
61% of FAMILIES USA FOUNDATION INC’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (81% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 13 funders to 14 funders, grant income rose $2.2M → $4.1M.
5 of 32 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 24% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of FAMILIES USA FOUNDATION INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 32 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
FAMILIES USA FOUNDATION INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 22% of grant income, and it takes 5 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 5 funders to its left
35% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund FAMILIES USA FOUNDATION INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 28% · 2018 38% · 2019 39% · 2020 17% · 2021 28% · 2022 18% · 2023 37% — growing more concentrated.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
59% of FAMILIES USA FOUNDATION INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 69% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
FAMILIES USA FOUNDATION INC draws 93% of its grant income from funders outside Washington, D.C., across 13 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $7.8M arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
