01What it does

What Community Farmshare does

Mission

Community Farmshare is a montgomery county based nonprofit working to create a thriving, connected food system that produces food, health and well-being for people who have the least access to healthy food options, while renewing and protecting the planet by supporting local small scale produce farmers.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Farm to school (f2s) - Community Farmshare provides weekly fresh produce to referred families at high farms rates montgomery county public schools, providing a key nutrition benefit during the agricultural season (including summer months when healthy food access is challenging with reduced school meals programs). School case management workers refer families in need of consistent healthy food assistance. The program's goals are to support childhood nutrition, address food insecurity and make the link between healthy eating and local farms, in order to foster healthy eating habits in line with a disease prevention model.

  2. Food is medicine (fim) - Community Farmshare partners with community based organizations, clinics and nutrition educators to support low income residents facing food insecurity and managing diet related chronic disease (and addressing disease prevention in their households). The program includes weekly fresh produce during the agricultural season, supported by nutrition education and one on one motivational counseling to support lasting positive health outcomes. Program participants are low-income, living in communities lacking healthy food access, therefore facing increased risk for diet related chronic disease.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2021 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 7 funders, grant income rose $6k → $108k.

3 of 17 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 13% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of COMMUNITY FARMSHARE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

COMMUNITY FARMSHARE has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 27% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

57% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund COMMUNITY FARMSHARE.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $64k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
