What Community Bike Works does
Mission
Community Bike Works teaches life lessons through bicycles to the young people of the lehigh valley who could benefit most.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
In our flagship program, earn a bike, students 9 and older team up with adult mentors for a course on bike mechanics and safety. Students practice communication, teamwork, perseverance, and other life skills while working on their bikes. Junior earn a bike teaches similar lessons to younger students, with a social and emotional foundation. Upon completing their courses, students earn their refurbished bike and a new helmet! In 2024-25, 617 students participated in our bike mentoring programs; 94% earn their bikes. Of students who completed earn a bike, 92% said that earn a bike helped them learn they could do things they didn't think they could do before.
$1,047,913 spent100% of program spendingCycling and drop-in: drop-in offers time to build relationships with mentors through projects, including bike work and steam activities. We offer trail, track, road, and mountain bike programs that allow students to be active and spend time outdoors with mentors. Our mountain bike team competes across the state. In 2025, teens helped to update the city's cycling ordinance. They compared the city ordinance to the state's cycling law, used their personal experience as cyclists in the city to recommend updates, and then rolled to city hall and presented their findings to council. The updated ordinance passed in april!
Youth leadership: students 12 and older can participate in youth leadership seminars on college, careers, and community. Once they turn 14, students can apply to become paid youth apprentices, mentoring younger students while learning work skills. "I have been coming to bike works for 3 years and have helped volunteer in earn a bike and jr earn a bike 3 times each," fayrouz tells us. "I love it here because these people have helped me become a better version of myself. I'm now less shy, more outgoing, kinder, and just overall a better person."

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2023 to 2024, from $359k to $162k (−55%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2017 12% · 2018 17% · 2019 9% · 2020 27% · 2021 34% · 2022 9% · 2023 27% · 2024 10% · 2025 38%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
103% of COMMUNITY BIKE WORKS’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (82% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 15 funders to 20 funders, grant income rose $164k → $542k.
9 of 52 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 12% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of COMMUNITY BIKE WORKS’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 52 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
COMMUNITY BIKE WORKS leans on a few funders — its largest provides 38% of grant income and the top three 61%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
51% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund COMMUNITY BIKE WORKS.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 37% · 2018 44% · 2019 32% · 2020 37% · 2021 39% · 2022 35% · 2023 34% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
56% of COMMUNITY BIKE WORKS's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 63% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
93% of COMMUNITY BIKE WORKS's grant income comes from Pennsylvania funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $450k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
