Mission

We envision a world where every person's basic needs are met. It's a world filled with love and respect for its people and the planet. It's a world where democracy reigns and each person is able to reach their fullest potential. It is a world where equity is the norm and oppression, in all forms, is eradicated. It is a world without war and violence. The world we want is possible, but it will only exist if we work together. We win campaigns that have a direct impact on people's lives, we build the infrastructure to develop more power, and we are constantly changing hearts and minds across new york state in order to spread our vision and change what's possible to win.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base held at 9 funders, grant income rose $198k → $1.0M.

3 of 36 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 21% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $57k from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Alliance for Quality Education Inc). These are real filings, and they are not money CITIZEN ACTION OF NEW YORK INC raised.

From the IRS filings of CITIZEN ACTION OF NEW YORK INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 36 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

CITIZEN ACTION OF NEW YORK INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 16% of grant income, and it takes 5 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 5 funders to its left

99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CITIZEN ACTION OF NEW YORK INC.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $980k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
