What Center for Economic Democracy Inc does

Mission

The center for economic democracy [c.e.d.] is a u.s. Social movement building organization, growing capacity in our communities to transform american capitalism into a more just, sustainable and democratic economy.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Ced completed several major milestones in 2025:1) ced launched the brave narratives project in collaboration with local partners to release the "a collective future" documentary about inspiring examples of community ownership models, and organized boston-area residents to pledge in support of economic democracy projects. 2) ced mobilized the resources and built the infrastructure for a community led decision making process that's incubated community ownership projects statewide. 3) ced led the first movement finance forum convening that brought together practitioners from across several ecosystems to advance a coordinated network approach, and successfully launched the people's budget survey to strengthen resident-led demands of the city budget, while our coalition for worker ownership and power's new research and policy agenda was developed.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 4 funders to 31 funders, grant income rose $599k → $3.7M.

20 of 75 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 57% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of CENTER FOR ECONOMIC DEMOCRACY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 75 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

CENTER FOR ECONOMIC DEMOCRACY INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 23% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

67% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CENTER FOR ECONOMIC DEMOCRACY INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

Where its funders are

57% of CENTER FOR ECONOMIC DEMOCRACY INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $10M that is directly attributable, 50% of it comes from Massachusetts funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $14M arriving through sponsors registered in 14 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
