What Carolinas Golf Foundation does

Mission

The Carolinas Golf Foundation was formed by the carolinas golf association in 1977 to provide scholarships and funding for a variety of carolinas-based golf initiatives.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The foundation's scholarship program supports students who are aspiring to become golf superintendents and turfgrass managers in the carolinas. The Carolinas Golf Foundation underwrites grants to turfgrass majors at clemson university and north carolina state university. Individual grants varied in value up to $2,000. Charles e. Lynch jr., cga counsel, noted, "this year's winners are the men and women who will direct tomorrow's turf programs. They will discover solutions for future turfgrass problems. We are pleased to participate in endowing this ongoing program." the Carolinas Golf Foundation first offered scholarship aid to turfgrass majors in 1977. The foundation also started a more expansive scholarship program in 2020 by giving $25,000 to several students who excel in grade, community work and who also have an interest in golf. The Carolinas Golf Foundation has provided more than $1,500,000 over the last 37 years for various projects and scholarships. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 8 funders, grant income rose $200 → $24k.

5 of 21 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 52% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $1.4M from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Carolinas Golf Association). These are real filings, and they are not money CAROLINAS GOLF FOUNDATION raised.

From the IRS filings of CAROLINAS GOLF FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

CAROLINAS GOLF FOUNDATION has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 19% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

59% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CAROLINAS GOLF FOUNDATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

33% of CAROLINAS GOLF FOUNDATION's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 52% give in more than one year at all.

first grant+1y+2y+3y+4y+5y

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

52% of CAROLINAS GOLF FOUNDATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $128k that is directly attributable, 81% of it comes from North Carolina funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $140k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
