Mission
Cancer Legal Care's (clc) mission is to engage the law to resolve the complex challenges facing people and communities affected by cancer. Over 6,700 minnesotans have received direct legal care services from clc staff and volunteer attorneys and 9,062 cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, attorneys, and health care providers have attended and learned from one or more of our 293 group education or virtual information presentations.

Programs
In 2025, clc's legal care program (lcp), our largest combined program, provided free legal services to a total of 647 minnesotans who had a combined 858 different legal matters; maintaining the 20+% growth in clients since 2023. The biggest areas of needed legal care were social security disability insurance, estate planning, and insurance coverage issues. As has been the trend for the last few years, a growing number of clients have stage iv cancer. In 2015, 26% of our clients were stage iv. In 2025, 52% of our clients were living with stage iv cancer. The lcp is designed to help our clients maintain financial security and family stability effectively and efficiently. The following is a breakdown of client's legal needs and areas of legal care provided: 18% - insurance coverage (health insurance, short/long term disability)8% - housing and financial (eviction, foreclosure, creditor issues, bankruptcy) 8% - employment (ada/mhra discrimination/reasonable accommodation, fmla) 23% - legal planning (health care directives, guardianship, wills, powers of attorney) 34% - public benefits (social security disability, medicaid) 9% - other (immigration, tax, family).80% of our clients…

Icare (insurance claim advocacy and resolution) addresses the growing number of health insurance coverage denials due to many factors including shrinking networks and ever-changing pre-authorization requirements. Our goal with icare is to make a significant impact on the health and financial well-being of our clients by way of ensuring that their insurance covers what it should, and that hospital billing and coding errors are corrected so that our clients are not responsible for bills that are not theirs to pay. Since piloting this work in 2019, we have closed 176 complicated insurance matters with a 94% success rate for our clients. Of these closed matters, success included protecting or recovering $4,471,875.94 in health, disability, or life insurance benefits that had initially been denied to 85 of our clients by their insurance company. The individual client dollar amount ranges from $150 to $565,000, with an average recovery/protection of $52,610.31 per client. "your support means the world to me, and I truly couldn't…

When this program started in january 2023, our work focused on completing social security disability benefit (either ssdi or ssi) applications on behalf of cancer patients. This work continues, reducing barriers and assisting cancer patients whose high cost of treatment and inability to work are impacting their economic security and increasing their risk for financial toxicity.after three years we have learned a lot from our clients and how to best support them in accessing these essential financial supports. One thing we have learned is that some of our clients want to apply for benefits on their own but with the knowledge and support from a trusted guide to get them from start to finish. This is where Cancer Legal Care can help. In the last year clc attorneys have guided 33 cancer patients and caregivers through the process of applying for ssdi or ssi on their own.what does this look like? The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2018, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2018, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2021 to 2022, from $453k to $346k (−24%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2018 36% · 2019 31% · 2020 33% · 2021 32% · 2022 19% · 2023 29% · 2024 29% · 2025 45%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 10 funders, grant income rose $11k → $120k.
8 of 26 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 14% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of CANCER LEGAL CARE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
CANCER LEGAL CARE has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 22% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left
35% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CANCER LEGAL CARE.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 93% · 2018 68% · 2019 44% · 2020 42% · 2021 31% · 2022 31% · 2023 42% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
69% of CANCER LEGAL CARE's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 54% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
78% of CANCER LEGAL CARE's grant income comes from Minnesota funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $160k arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
