01What it does

What Campaign for Black Male Achievement Inc does

Mission

Established in 2008 as an initiative of the open society foundations, the campaign for black male achievement (cbma) is a national membership network that seeks to ensure the growth, sustainability, and impact of leaders and organizations committed to improving the life outcomes of black men and boys. In 2015, cbma spun off from the open society foundations as an independent entity which supports a growing network of more than 4,700 individuals representing more than 2,500 organizations across the united states, with resources and services for capacity building, network building, and strategic communications.

As stated on its FY2018 Form 990.

Program

Since its inception in 2008, cbma has grown its member network toinclude over 5,000 leaders representing nearly 2,000 organizations and programs serving black men and boys across the country. In 2017, cbma deepened its grant-supported high school excellence (hse) framework to elevate young black men and boys' preparation to fully participate in college, career and community beyond high school completion. In addition to establishing cbma's strategic direction for the next five years, cbma delivered services and supports to the black male achievement (bma) field through capacity-building, network/movement-building, strategic communications and field promotions. Cbma serves as a national lead organization that offers supports and opportunities like the signature rumble young man, rumble (rymr) convening hosted annually in louisville, ky and detroit, mi. In response to issues and topics identified via the bma field, cbma solidified its national role as a connector and convener of leaders and organizations. Cbma connects membership leaders with monthly network conference calls and recurring gatherings where they share best practices, develop collaborations, and foster well-being. In…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2021: the base narrowed from 8 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $3.0M → $50k.

3 of 21 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 42% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

CAMPAIGN FOR BLACK MALE ACHIEVEMENT INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 40% of grant income and the top three 70%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

55% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CAMPAIGN FOR BLACK MALE ACHIEVEMENT INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.1M arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
