01What it does

What Birds for Sofia Inc does

Mission

Birds for Sofia supports children diagnosed with rare, inheritable diseases from Eastern Europe. We help families with children with rare diseases access medical care, genetic testing, rehabilitation, and equipment not covered by insurance. Since the war in Ukraine, we helped to re-establish medical care and access to housing during medical treatment for a number of Ukrainian families in the USA, who were confirmed through "Uniting for Ukraine" parolees.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Medical Support Grants - This Program focuses on delivering essential medical equipment, life-saving medical supplies and medications, as well as covers critical medical treatments and rehabilitation services for children with rare diseases who live in Ukraine.

  2. Lviv Hospital Rehabilitation Wing - There is currently no pediatric neuromuscular rehabiliation center in Ukraine. We are working to open the first specialized rehab department in Ukraine.

  3. Enteral Nutrition Initiative - Our Enteral Nutrition Initiative began as a lifesaving effort to support children in Ukraine with rare diseases who rely ongastrostomy tubes for feeding. Since its launch in February 2024, this emergency response has grown into a broader campaign. Due to the overwhelming demand, we are now working to unite multiple organizations around the world in finding sustainable solutions for delivering critical medical nutrition to Ukraine including both enteral feeding formulas and other specialized dietary products.

  4. SMA Program - Our Spinal Muscular Atrophy Program targets cases where treatment cannot be covered by insurance or governmental support, and the need for urgent medical equipment, treatment or crucial rehabilitation courses is demonstrated. In 2025, we expanded the programs scope to include surgical cases requiring urgent intervention. These may involve spinal stabilization, orthopedic corrections, neurological, or gastrointestinal surgeries that are time-sensitive and can significantly enhance mobility, reduce pain, or prevent life-threatening complications that can arise as the disease progresses.

  6. Unbiased Inheritable Disease - We deliver aid to children with ultra-rare, lessknowndiseases by covering high-cost treatments not funded by insurance. We prioritize urgent cases where FDA-approved effective therapy exists and can make a life-changing impact.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2022 → 2023: the base broadened from 3 funders to 4 funders, grant income fell $463k → $386k.

3 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 5% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Birds for Sofia Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Birds for Sofia Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 94% of grant income and the top three 99%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Birds for Sofia Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $71k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
