01What it does

What Belmont Community Resource Services does

Mission

The Belmont Food Pantry and The Closet provide food, clothing, hygiene items, housewares, and resources to help support those facing food and housing insecurity. We partner/collaborate with other nonprofits/government agencies to access services to help our families move beyond food insecurity. In 2024, over 73,000 people were provided support through our programs.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The Belmont Food Pantry has been distributing food on the Southside of Richmond every Friday from 8:30 am to noon for over 20 years (never missed a Friday distribution). Our drive-thru and walk-up style pantry provides 30 lbs. of food per family each week. However, when the demand is high those coming after 11 am may receive 20-25 lbs. depending on our inventory and family size. Four hourly employees and more than 90 weekly volunteers (over 16,800 hours annually) manage food collection and distribution weekly. In 2024, more than 600,000 lbs. of food was received from our 13 Feed More grocery store partners, 117,000 lbs. of dry goods from local churches and community food drives, and we purchased over 200,000 lbs. of food from Feed More. Our program grew by 15% in 2024 feeding an additional 12,000 people.

  2. The Closet has been in operation for more than 15 years, providing high quality clothing, shoes, hygiene items, housewares, books, and some toys to pantry guests at no cost. Donation collection, organization, and distribution is overseen by a part-time program associate and dedicated volunteers. The Closet receives donations throughout the week and is open for 'shopping" from 8:45am to noon every Friday and shoppers may fill a large grocery bag. Nonclothing items can be selected as well, however, there is often a waiting list for items such as small appliances, dishes, cookware, coats, and specific sizes. In 2024, we distributed more than 140,000 items to help support our families, many of which experienced food insecurity, housing insecurity, and/or immigration to the US. In 2024, nearly 90% of our guests were women (shopping for a family) and over 70% identified as Hispanic. In 2024, The Closet supported more than 130 shoppers a week.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 3 funders, grant income fell $31k → $14k.

4 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 51% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of BELMONT COMMUNITY RESOURCE SERVICES’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

BELMONT COMMUNITY RESOURCE SERVICES leans on a few funders — its largest provides 48% of grant income and the top three 95%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund BELMONT COMMUNITY RESOURCE SERVICES.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 100% · 2021 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 51% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

51% of BELMONT COMMUNITY RESOURCE SERVICES's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $72k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from Virginia funders.

VA

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $75k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
