01What it does

What Allegheny Goatscape Inc does

Mission

Allegheny GoatScape's mission is to reduce invasive and unwanted vegetation in public spaces and vacant lots, utilizing goats for browsing. Working in and around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Allegheny GoatScape accomplishes this mission by partnering with organizations, land owners, and businesses, allowing our animals to eat vegetation on the overgrown properties. Giving goats access to intentional properties removes vegetation in an ecologically-friendly and efficient manner, setting the stage for additional land management and restoration. Allegheny GoatScape also promotes goat husbandry and resources access for those interested in raising goats in the Pittsburgh region, and invasive species education for those seeking to improve their local ecology.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Allegheny GoatScape (AGS) received a grant from PNC Charitable Trusts to establish a geriatric herd, called the Golden Goats, for specific animals to receive additional care and support as aging or physically vulnerable goats. Extra care is provided to this herd since they are not as mobile as other animals. While other AGS herds work on projects in all types of terrain, the Golden Goats are only placed in locations with little elevation change, relative ease for staff and volunteers to tend to them. The herd did work on a few appropriate projects in 2024, and their work provided additional fee for service revenue to the grant that began in April 2024 and was to be spent by the end of March 2025. Additional revenue comes from non-discretionary donations.

  2. AGS contracts with the City of Pittsburgh to work on intentional City-owned property, primarily City Parks and vacant lots, to provide invasive species management. In 2024, Allegheny GoatScape addressed 20 acres through their contract. In addition to land management, our staff provides outreach events at many of the working locations to share with the public the importance of native species and how goats provide a valuable service in supporting the local landscape care. Additional support for these projects were subsidized through non-discretionary donations. All revenue supports winter care of the animals when they are not actively working on landscaping service projects.

  3. AGS is part of a consortium of organizations under the Pittsburgh Tree Canopy Alliance. Federal funding was awarded to address tree canopy issues throughout Allegheny County, PA, with Tree Pittsburgh as the manager and fiduciary of this multi-year project. AGS works with other partner organization in specific neighborhoods to provide invasive management services as a comprehensive management strategy to add more trees to local spaces where they are needed. In 2024, AGS addressed approximately nine acres of unwanted vegetation through partner partnership site selection. In addition to land management, our staff provides collaborative outreach events at many of the working locations to share with the public the importance of native species and how goats provide a valuable service in supporting the local landscape care. All revenue support winter care of the animals when they are unable to provide landscaping services.

  4. AGS contracts different organizations, municipalities, companies and land owners to address invasive plant species issues throughout Allegheny County, PA. We use the same model across our projects as we do with the City of Pittsburgh and our Pittsburgh Tree Canopy Alliance projects. In 2024, AGS addressed 26 acres across 15 different projects. Some of the highlights included the GAP Trail along the Monongahela River in Homestead, fee for service provided by Waterfront Association; private wooded area, fee for service provided by Heinz Estate; Hays Woods Park, fee for service provided by The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy; wooded area adjacent to new development in Fairywood, Pittsburgh, fee for service provided by RIDC; overgrown areas on Penn State University - Greater Allegheny Campus, fee for service provided by the Penn State University; and others. In addition to land management, our staff provided outreach events at some of the working locations to share with the public the importance of native species and how goats provide a valuable service in supporting the local landscape care. Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $5k → $24k.

4 of 16 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 36% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

How concentrated its funding is

ALLEGHENY GOATSCAPE INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 26% of grant income and the top three 62%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

75% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ALLEGHENY GOATSCAPE INC.
