01What it does

What Wild Africa does

Mission

Wild Africa fund is dedicated to raising awareness and promoting efforts that preserve africa's natural beauty and wildlife, as well as the communities that rely on it.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. We are partnered with over 200 ambassadors from music, sports, film, tv, business, religion and government from nigeria, ghana, namibia, zimbabwe, somaliland, south africa, rwanda, and tanzania. We are building a pan-african media distribution network through more than 25 national and international broadcasters, as well as radio, newspaper, billboard and social media companies to promote conservation and other environmental issues through a range of programming.we seek to increase the demand for wildlife conservation by popularizing it and engaging a broad audience, especially youth. By giving a platform to high-profile, concerned africans and supporting on the ground efforts, we seek to engage urban populations in experiencing wildlife tourism, supporting effective modern wildlife laws and their active enforcement, and empowering local conservation projects. At the same time, we look to increase reporting of wildlife crime and to reduce the demand for illegal bushmeat, protecting endangered species and minimizing the risk of zoonotic disease. Finally, we aim to change human wildlife conflict into peaceful and beneficial coexistence and promote ways to reduce habitat degradation.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

6 of 11 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 44% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of WILD AFRICA’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

WILD AFRICA leans on a few funders — its largest provides 51% of grant income and the top three 91%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

95% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund WILD AFRICA.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.4M arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
