Mission

The mission of the Village of Love and Resistance (VOLAR) is to co-create a cooperative community in East Baltimore owned by residents impacted by racist systems of uneven development. We seek to build this cooperative community through the reclamation of land, healing, reconnecting and building a base of community power. This includes: Building power and leadership; healing together and co-owning land as a re-distributive, cooperative and ways of being in community

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The Village of Love and Resistance (VOLAR) provided financial literacy and social history trainings, wellness circles, learning circles, and membership circles throughout the year. VOLAR organized four community clean-ups during 2024. Two newsletters were published highlighting work done in the community. The majority of these activities are carried out through volunteer work. The Village of Love and Resistance is progressing on the rehabilitation of a building that will create a seven unit intentional housing community. In addition, VOLAR is in the pre-development phase of an additional building that will house a Community Hub. This hub will be occupied by social entrepreneurs and retail businesses plus have dedicated space to promote mindfulness and wellness.

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 4 funders, grant income rose $20k → $181k.

5 of 11 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 48% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of VILLAGE OF LOVE AND RESISTANCE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

VILLAGE OF LOVE AND RESISTANCE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 43% of grant income and the top three 85%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

95% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund VILLAGE OF LOVE AND RESISTANCE.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $328k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
