01What it does

What Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development does

Mission

Tumbleweed had been helping young people get off the streets and move toward becoming a self-sufficient adult.

As stated on its FY2017 Form 990.

Program

Casa de suenos --three residential housing sites for up to 30 unaccompanied minor refugees referred to tumbleweed from the federal office of refugee resettlement orr. Having often been exposed to exploitation, human trafficking and violence, these child survivors get medical care, counseling, skills development, serves acculturation, language development and continuing education. This program was up for competitive renewal starting october 2016 but orr provided extensions through february 2017 citing a vague explanation about the department being held up with contract renewals. In february, line staff were the first individuals informed by our assigned federal agents that the contract was not going to renew and we had one week to assist in the transfer of client cases. From july 2016 through february 2017, 102 clients were served in this program.

The first program described on its most recent Form 990, which lists programs largest first by expense.

02Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

1 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 10% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development leans on a few funders — its largest provides 44% of grant income and the top three 87%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

94% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $32k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
