What Traverse City Curling Club Inc does

Mission

The mission of the traverse city curling club is to promote local, regional, national, and international competition in the sport of curling and to own and/or provide grounds, buildings, equipment, and facilities for this use, and to educate the community about the sport of curling. Building a strong community through the sport of curling.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. The club provided an introduction to the sport of curling to the community and continues promoting the sport and league play. We welcomed the public in to learn how to curl by hosting over 120 group rentals that were celebrations and gatherings of families, coworkers, and friends. We offered over 30 beginning and advanced curling classes where people tried something new and held over 45 junior classes that welcomed over 100 kids in our community. We put on 3 local tournaments and 1 regional tournament that brought in teams from around the midwest and canada. Hosted a six-day national championship event in partnership with usa curling. We drew over 1,000 spectators and live streaming, with live commentary, that drew an international audience, and had robust media coverage that brought positive attention to traverse city. We held 160 league nights for club members in the fall, winter, and spring seasons. We had 88 volunteers contributing their time as instructors, coaches, assistants, ice team technicians, and event and operations support. Nearly all of our volunteers showed up for multiple events.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base narrowed from 2 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $100k → $15k.

2 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 2% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of TRAVERSE CITY CURLING CLUB INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

TRAVERSE CITY CURLING CLUB INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 59% of grant income and the top three 95%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

33% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund TRAVERSE CITY CURLING CLUB INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 70% · 2021 100% · 2022 56% · 2023 100% — growing more concentrated.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $10k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
