01What it does

What The New 42nd Street Inc does

Mission

The new 42nd street, inc. (d/b/a new 42) is a leading performing arts nonprofit whose mission is to make extraordinary performing arts a vital part of everyone's life from the earliest years onward.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. The new 42nd street, inc. (d/b/a new 42) was established in 1990 by the city and state of new york as a non-profit organization and was entrusted with 99-year leases of seven historic theaters and two infill properties on 42nd street between 7th and 8th avenues in new york city. Guided by the public goal of returning 42nd street to its former status as a lively cultural and entertainment destination, new 42 operates programming out of two buildings under its stewardship: new victory theater and new 42 studios. New 42 has strategically subleased its remaining properties to generate earned income and ensure the ongoing vibrancy of 42nd street. In our 2024-25 season, new 42 made (continued on schedule o) extraordinary performing arts experiences possible for over 91,000 kids, families and artists. Through our commitment to ensure access for all, new victory theater provided free tickets for families residing in new york city housing authority (nycha) sites, $2 tickets to students as the largest provider of live performing arts for new york city public schools, and tickets averaging under $35 for all families due to funder subsidies that enable low ticket prices. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 26 funders to 48 funders, grant income rose $1.2M → $1.9M.

15 of 136 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 20% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THE NEW 42ND STREET INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 136 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THE NEW 42ND STREET INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 35% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $4.6M arriving through sponsors registered in 11 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
