01What it does

What The Assistance Fund Inc does

Mission

To help insured people with life-changing diseases overcome the financial barriers preventing them from accessing treatment.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. In 2025, the assistance fund (taf) provided over $213 million in financial assistance to approximately 73,000 patients. Taf launched nine new disease programs in 2025, bringing the total number of diseases covered to over 100 (including 65 rare diseases). Taf assisted nearly 5,000 patients with health insurance premiums and other incidental medical expenses. Taf provides assistance to patients on a calendar-year basis and offers annual reenrollment for most disease programs, subject to availability of funding. Ninety-five percent (95%) of patients who applied for reenrollment for 2025 were approved. Nearly one-quarter of taf patients receive assistance across multiple years.

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 5 funders, grant income rose $700 → $14k.

7 of 17 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 2% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

How concentrated its funding is

THE ASSISTANCE FUND INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 97% of grant income and the top three 98%; half comes from just 1 funder.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $103k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
