What The American Institute of Afghanistan Studies does
Mission
To improve research and advanced study of afghanistan and its region.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Program
Presidents report since the closing of the kabul office closed, aias has had to reorient where its money would go. The amount of fellowships has significantly increased as aias is able to dedicate more funding for fellowships and decided to fund research on afghanistan from within the u.s. Instead of afghanistan. Dr. Barfield shared who the 2024-2025 fellowship recipients were. All awards are noted in the year in review report. Aias granted 1 caorc awards and 6 aias-funded awards. This year was a higher number of awards than previous years due to being able to obligate more funding to fellowships than programming. Aias tries to be as wide as possible in terms of the type of research it is funding and can return to the conversation of whether or not to support research from within afghanistan. Dr. Barfield shared that in the near future, he would like to discuss the possibility of funding research travel grants to afghanistan again or research from within afghanistan again.we still do not support any research within afghanistan and until conditions are safer, do not plan to jepardize the safety of any scholar to do so.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2024 to 2025, from $366k to $691k (+89%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2017 84% · 2018 97% · 2019 96% · 2020 99% · 2021 100% · 2025 96%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
96% of THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF AFGHANISTAN STUDIES’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (100% for the typical peer).
