01What it does

What Tacoma Farmers Market does

Mission

The mission of the Tacoma Farmers Market is to provide a sustainable market venue where local farms and small businesses can connect directly with consumers and the community. In doing so, our three markets support our vision of: preserving local farms and farmland, strengthening our local economy, building small businesses, providing access to healthy food for all residents, and creating vibrant spaces for community engagement.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. TFM Traditional Markets run 4 days a week from May-September and include 4 Tacoma locations: Downtown Broadway, Eastside, Point Ruston and Multicare in Hilltop. These markets support WIC, EBT, PEBT, and SNAP programs for families and individuals qualifying for assistance. To qualify as a Farmers Market through the WFMA, as well as accept WIC, we must commit to hosting 5 farmers per market with a certain percentage of revenue going to our farm vendors. Our commitment to qualifying as a farmers market solidifies our goals to increase access to fresh and local produce. These markets also provide a space for local farmers and businesses to direct sell to customers and to build a customer base.

  2. The Fresh Express Mobile Market is a year round mobile market that travels to 8 different locations throughout Pierce County. This market brings fresh and local produce, bread, eggs, and other items to customers who may have transportation or other mobility restrictions. This programs partners with community organizations to pin point locations with limited food access as well as with local farmers to purchase directly and sell to consumers. FEM accepts EBT, SNAP and PEBT as well as other forms of payment assistance.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income fell $10k → $36.

2 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 14% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of TACOMA FARMERS MARKET’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

TACOMA FARMERS MARKET leans on a few funders — its largest provides 40% of grant income and the top three 82%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

98% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund TACOMA FARMERS MARKET.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $28k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
