01What it does

What Strategic Advocacy for Human Rights Inc does

Mission

Fueling a worldwide network of women human rights defenders (whrds) to strengthen laws, policies and practices to end sexual and gender-based violence (sgbv).

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Afghanistan - in 2023, sahr entered into a fiscal sponsorship agreement with the women for justice organization (wjo), a non-profit, non-governmental organization registered in kabul, afghanistan. Wjo's mission is to defend women's rights and strengthen institutional accountability, prevention, and response to gender-based violence. Under this agreement, sahr assumes the fiscal and administrative responsibilities of receiving and managing charitable contributions on behalf of wjo. This partnership emerged in response to the humanitarian and governance crisis following the taliban's takeover in august 2021, which made international financial transactions to afghanistan either impossible or severely restricted. To ensure wjo's continued operations, sahr agreed to receive grants on wjo's behalf and to disburse payments to wjo staff based in multiple countries, in accordance with both the terms of the fiscal sponsorship agreement and the requirements set by wjo's donors.

  3. Gender justice fellowship - the sahr gender justice accelerator is a 12-month legal development and leadership program that equips lawyers and human rights defenders with the skills, networks, and strategic support to transform laws and policies that perpetuate sexual and gender-based violence (sgbv). The program dismantles barriers to participation in policy-making by fostering a community of practice where advocates gain the legal expertise, political fluency, and international connections needed to drive systemic change. More than a support program, the accelerator cultivates leadership and amplifies voices that are too often excluded from legal and policy spaces. Through our model, participants gain hands-on experience and collaborative opportunities to translate knowledge into impact. Core strategies legal mentorship and capacity building: on-the-job guidance for lawyers and human rights defenders working on strategic litigation, law reform, and policy initiatives advancing gender justice. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income fell $16k → $20.

3 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 75% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of STRATEGIC ADVOCACY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

STRATEGIC ADVOCACY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 67% of grant income and the top three 97%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

97% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund STRATEGIC ADVOCACY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $56k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
