What St Francis Animal Sanctuary Inc does
Mission
St. Francis Animal Sanctuary is a haven for the care and adoption of unwanted animals in Southwest Mississippi and Louisiana.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
St. Francis Animal Sanctuary ("SFAS") was formed to operate as a no-kill sanctuary for all companion pet animals. To aid in the fulfillment of its mission, the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary provides animal rescue operations, food, medical treatment, and a temporary haven for otherwise adoptable pets.St. Francis Animal Sanctuary is the largest no-kill companion pet sanctuary in the Southeast United States. The organization not only rescues pets, but gives compassion and hope to struggling families. SFAS provides shelter for the beloved pets of families who lost their jobs or homes and are no longer able to provide for their pets. When animals are facing death, SFAS provides a permanent sanctuary home where they receive love, affection and quality care for the rest of their lives. SFAS provides a permanent home to more than 400 companion pets annually.
$632,661 spent97% of program spendingSt. Francis Animal Sanctuary holds adoption days various times a month around its geographic region for select animals. SFAS looks for responsible and caring people to provide rescued animals a second chance at happiness. The organization expects all of the animals to become an integral part of their new family. SFAS has basic guidelines that are considered to qualify a person for adoption. If an individual qualifies for adoption, a legally binding adoption agreement is signed and an adoption fee is remitted.
$12,368 spent$25,169 earned by the program2% of program spendingSt. Francis Animal Sanctuary has a fostering program in order to further its mission with limited resources. The organization has 24 acres; however there is limited space due to its no-kill mission. Foster families provide more capacity for SFAS allowing them to help more animals. Certain animals may need to be fostered for a variety of reasons, such as they are too young for adoption or in order to recover after a medical procedure. Foster families provide the love and stability these animal need to be happy and healthy, both mentally and physically. When an animal has been in a foster home, it is more confident and social; therefore, it is able to transition into its new home with ease.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2018 to 2019, from $1.2M to $1.6M (+30%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2022 12%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
93% of St Francis Animal Sanctuary Inc’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (74% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base held at 4 funders, grant income fell $123k → $27k.
3 of 14 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 50% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
50% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund St Francis Animal Sanctuary Inc.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 81% · 2018 85% · 2019 78% · 2020 84% · 2021 63% · 2022 82% · 2023 83% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
44% of St Francis Animal Sanctuary Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 43% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
50% of St Francis Animal Sanctuary Inc's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $140k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Mississippi, across 5 states.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $143k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
