What Spirit Run Equine Rescue does
Mission
The rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of equine.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.
Programs
The rescue was able to help 25 horses in 2023. There was much time spent with people and their horses working through problems to make it possible to keep the horse in the home. Services provided were chiropractor, dentist, farrier, training, vet, euthanasia and burial assistance, consultations on problem horses and how to feed older horses correctly. Three horses rescued. Hero, in his 20's, arrived in a sad and painful state. He could not take a solid step due to pain and he was thin as well. After a few months of providing corrective shoes and pain management meds, Hero was trotting circles around me. The founder that had crippled him could not be cured, but his heart was so big and proud! We enjoyed our time with Hero and he knew that he was loved. RIP old friend. We got a call from a local lady that was struggling with keeping weight on a horse in his late teens named Seven. When we arrived he was nothing but bones and so very hungry. Although he stood in front of a hay bale he could not eat enough to curb his hunger. Once he arrived here at SRER, the dentist floated his teeth, which were horrid and sharp. He was safely wormed to remove parasites and then began to gain weight.…

We understand that making this tough decision is already challenging, and financial constraints should not prolong a horse's suffering. We offer assistance of $150 per horse, or other equine, in need of this compassionate act, directly covering the costs of the procedure through the veterinarian.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2021, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2021, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2023 to 2024, from $1k to $54k (+4892%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
99% of SPIRIT RUN EQUINE RESCUE’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (86% for the typical peer).
Surplus & reserves
Operating surplus or deficit each year, and months of liquidity in hand. 2 of the last 4 reported years ran a deficit.
Who funds it, year by year
2018 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income fell $10k → $48.
3 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 20% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of SPIRIT RUN EQUINE RESCUE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
SPIRIT RUN EQUINE RESCUE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 80% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 100% · 2019 100% · 2020 100% · 2021 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
SPIRIT RUN EQUINE RESCUE draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside Texas, across 1 state in all.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $15k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
