Mission
To serve children and their families in the SOMA community by providing quality early care and education and free comprehensive family support services in a safe and nurturing environment.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Early Care and Education Program Our high-quality program promotes the social, emotional, cognitive and physical development of infants, toddlers and preschoolers. We currently serve nearly 130 children ages 0-5 years, 60% of whom are from low-income families. Our play- and project-based curriculum is inspired by the Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE) for infants and toddlers and Reggio Emilia Approach for preschoolers. Our goal is to provide a strong foundation so children will thrive in kindergarten and throughout their learning years.
$4,979,992 spent90% of program spendingFamily Resource Center (FRC) Program The FRC serves about 700 low-income families each year, including families with children enrolled in our programs and those with children ages 0-17 years who reside in the South of Market neighborhood. The FRC offers free comprehensive services such as case management, multi-lingual parenting education and support groups, assistance with basic living needs, school readiness programs and mental health services.
$484,548 spent9% of program spendingThe FRC receives additional Enhancement Grant Funding to be able to provide direct financial support to low-income families in the community, and to remove barriers for families accessing basic needs. Services offered through the Enhancement Grant include food security support in the form of grocery gift cards, diapers, wipes, and formula for families to access monthly. Families in the neighborhood are also able to access fresh produce and dry goods regularly. Over 80 families have received grocery gift cards and over 300 families will have access to the diaper bank throughout the year.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2018 to 2019, from $2.8M to $5.3M (+87%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2017 53% · 2018 48% · 2019 33% · 2020 58% · 2021 60% · 2022 64% · 2023 10% · 2024 72% · 2025 74%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
81% of South of Market Child Care Inc’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (48% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 4 funders to 9 funders, grant income rose $60k → $506k.
5 of 14 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 6% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
Left out of every figure on this page: $1.3M from 3 payers (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Low Income Investment Fund). These are real filings, and they are not money South of Market Child Care Inc raised.

How concentrated its funding is
South of Market Child Care Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 63% of grant income and the top three 84%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 58% · 2018 49% · 2019 35% · 2020 36% · 2021 25% · 2022 86% · 2023 79% — growing more concentrated.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
44% of South of Market Child Care Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 64% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
90% of South of Market Child Care Inc's grant income comes from California funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $107k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
