What South Mountain Conservancy Inc does
Mission
The South Mountain Conservancy is a volunteer-driven, non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation founded in March 2000 dedicated to the stewardship and advocacy for, and public engagement with, the 2,110-acre South Mountain Reservation, a county park in Essex County, New Jersey. Through extensive volunteer activities and public programs, many in partnership with the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, the Conservancy strives to preserve, protect, and enhance the ecology, infrastructure and natural beauty of the reservation. It also seeks to foster public appreciation, involvement and support for this beloved, forested regional park situated in densely populated suburbs 15 miles west of lower Manhattan.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.
Programs
*Forest Regeneration & Preserve Landscape Improvement and Forest Stewardship* -- The goals of these ecology-focused programs are to: 1.) Monitor, maintain and improve the ecology and infrastructure of the 14-acre Wildflower and Forest Preserve and, to a lesser extent, the 41 smaller regeneration sites throughout the Reservation, and to address select problems in areas adjoining these sites. 2.) Establish a implement a long-term invasive plant monitoring and management plan for the entire reservation with a particular focus on emerging invasive plant species and overall forest health. 1.Started in 2008, this long-term Forest Regeneration program seeks to provide native seed sources for the Reservation at large from these regeneration sites in order to restore a balanced forest ecology. This is necessary as the forest's natural regeneration has been impaired by an expanding set of invasive plants and insects and the over-browsing of native plants by an overpopulation of white-tailed deer. The program enlists the efforts of some two dozen volunteers who meet multiple times throughout the year, supplemented by community groups and two paid college summer interns (the program's most…

These programs are co-sponsored with the Essex County Parks Department. In 2023, the fall campout was cancelled due to rain on both the original and rain dates. To compensate, in 2024, programs were held in May and October that served over 90 families.
$7,585 spent14% of program spending*Citizen Science* -- This program combines public involvement with monitoring and stewardship of the Reservation's flora and fauna and creation of a pollinator meadow. For the past several years, interested members of the public have been trained in programs affiliated with Frogwatch USA and eBird to help monitor these populations. It has also overseen the installation and maintenance of bird nest boxes throughout the Reservation. In 2023, this program expanded its work by preparing an acre-sized (44,000 sq. ft.) meadow in the reservation to increase pollinators of all varieties. In 2024, the pollinator meadow ended its preparatory stages by removing clear plastic that had been used to solarize (kill off) existing seeds and sowed seeds to plant the meadow with a specially developed mix of native plants.

Located on a broad strip of land outside the 14-acre Wildflower and Forest Preserve along Bear Lane and within the Preserve, the WSP provides artists a chance to present their work to the public and expand on ideas in a much larger format. It augments its set of 16 permanent pieces each year with three to four new works on short-term loan. In addition, the WSP curator, artists and volunteers occasionally provide classes for community groups to better understand the art and the creative process. The WSP is supported by grants and infrastructure improvements by the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs. In 2024, we had three new exhibits, two of which were installed in the adjoining Preserve. ----------------------------------------------------------------------*Fairy Trail* -- Nationally publicized (NY Times, Reader's Digest), this enormously popular half-mile path…

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2020, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2020, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2021 to 2022, from $107k to $146k (+36%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
50% of SOUTH MOUNTAIN CONSERVANCY INC’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (39% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 6 funders, grant income rose $1k → $9k.
1 of 9 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 27% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of SOUTH MOUNTAIN CONSERVANCY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
SOUTH MOUNTAIN CONSERVANCY INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 68% of grant income and the top three 97%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
27% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SOUTH MOUNTAIN CONSERVANCY INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 91% · 2018 100% · 2019 87% · 2020 93% · 2021 97% · 2022 85% · 2023 69% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
40% of SOUTH MOUNTAIN CONSERVANCY INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 56% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
SOUTH MOUNTAIN CONSERVANCY INC draws 98% of its grant income from funders outside New Jersey, across 5 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $6k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
