Mission

Save Our Seminary (SOS) is a volunteer, nonprofit membership organization formed by preservationists and concerned citizens in 1989 to marshal public and private support and resources to preserve this unique and endangered part of our historical and architectural heritage. SOS's ongoing mission is to communicate the history of the National Park Seminary and promote preservation and public enjoyment of its buildings, artifacts, and landscape. SOS carries out this mission by: 1) Supporting preservation of the buildings of the NPS Historic District, 2) Collecting, preserving, and restoring artifacts related to the history of NPS, 3) Preserving, protecting, and restoring the landscape of NPS including statues, trails, and other features, 4) Communicating NPS history through research, documentation, interpretation, and education, and 5) Promoting public awareness of, support for, and access to this beautiful and unique site.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Conduct monthly tours of the grounds of the National Park Seminary campus, a former school for girls opened in 1894 and converted into an extension of Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1942. We serve approximately 200-300 persons per year in scheduled monthly tours, requested group tours, and a bi-annual tour of the Glen at National Park Seminary. Printing costs included in accomplishment2, below; they are hard to separate, as many of our handouts are used for multiple purposes.

  2. Conduct quarterly lectures/presentations on the history of the National Park Seminary and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center Forest Glen Annex campus. Prior to the Covid Pandemic, we served about 150-200 persons per year; with the start of Covid, we switched to an on-line format with a smaller in-person attendance but a much wider viewership through our website, www.saveourseminary.org, where we post recordings of the lectures. Program expenses listed include the cost of hosting the website, and reproduction of handouts for in-person tours.

  3. Preserve the historic statuary and other features of the National Park Seminary, in concert with the current property owners. In FY 22, after several years of fundraising and negotiations with the Maryland Historical Trust, we were finally able to have a historic zinc statue of a Native American restored to its original condition, representing how it looked when it was first placed on the site nearly 100 years ago. You can see a photo of the newly restored statue here: https://saveourseminary.org/news/. After the major expenditures of 2022, we had only minor expenditures for statuary cleaning and software licenses as we raise funds for our next project.

1 of 1 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of SAVE OUR SEMINARY AT FOREST GLEN’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

100% of SAVE OUR SEMINARY AT FOREST GLEN's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Too little is directly attributable to place on a map.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $389 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
