01What it does

What Renew Kc Neighborhoods does

Mission

Renovating, Restoring, and Renewing blighted Kansas City Metro neighborhoods and working to relieve the housing crisis that exists among the homeless veteran, impoverished, and elderly population in our community.

As stated on its FY2023 Form 990-EZ.

Program

  1. In 2023, ReNew KC Neighborhoods worked in a capacity to support the organization's mission to renovate, restore, and renew blighted Kansas City Metro neighborhoods. This included work in a partnership between ReNew KC and another nonprofit organization. The partnership was formed to renovate 1 home and construct 1 new-build home in Kansas City's east side. The property and homes will be owned by the partner organization and not ReNew KC. In 2022, the renovation work for the first home began. ReNew KC Neighborhoods made payments to vendors that assisted with objectives related to this renovation work and objectives related to the work for the future new-build project as well. While the renovation project began in 2023, the new-build project did not start construction in 2023. The Kansas City Metropolitan area is facing a growing homeless population. In January of 2019, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimated a total of 2,381 people were experiencing homelessness on any given day. Furthermore, in some areas of the KC Metro, anywhere from 1 in 4 to 1 out of 10 residential properties are unoccupied. These properties, instead of providing refuge to those…

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 3 funders, grant income fell $18k → $1k.

3 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of RENEW KC NEIGHBORHOODS’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

RENEW KC NEIGHBORHOODS leans on a few funders — its largest provides 97% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund RENEW KC NEIGHBORHOODS.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 100% · 2020 98% · 2021 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 83% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

100% of RENEW KC NEIGHBORHOODS's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $1k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Missouri, across 1 state.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $236k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
