01What it does

What Propagationnation does

Mission

To foster the propagation and growth of trees.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Tree propagation and distribution. Propagationnation is an intergenerational movement to renew the environment by planting coast redwoods and giant sequoias in the pacific northwest. We contract with nurseries to have redwood and sequoia seedlings grown and either sell or give those seedlings to individuals and organizations to plant those seedlings to reforest the northwest with redwood and sequoia trees. This program produces earned income. 40,000 trees were distributed in the planting season fall 2024-spring 2025 and 40,000 more trees were distributed in the planting season fall 2025-spring 2026.

  2. Schools. This program is education outreach to involve students at all levels in the education and planting of coast redwood and giant sequoia trees. In 2025 this program involved olympia middle school students in planting 15 coast redwoods on a tree farm south of elma, wa, and 36 first-year students at saint martin's university in planting 6 coast redwood and 6 giant sequoia trees on their campus in lacey, wa. In both cases education about the environmental importance of redwoods and sequoias was provided.

  3. Gps map. This program is designed to create a gps map of all of the coast redwoods and giant sequoias in the pacific northwest, as well as a gps map of all the redwoods and sequoias distributed by Propagationnation. There was very little activity in 2025 due to lack of staff.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $12 → $19k.

4 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 99% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of PROPAGATIONNATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

PROPAGATIONNATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 66% of grant income and the top three 99%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund PROPAGATIONNATION.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 100% · 2021 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 59% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

99% of PROPAGATIONNATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $500 that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Washington, across 1 state.

CA

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $95k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

These figures are read directly from IRS Form 990 / 990-PF e-file XML: this organization’s own return for FY2025 (financials across 2024–2025), and the filings of 5 funders that report grants to it. “On record” means captured in the filings we have parsed — a funder that does not e-file, or whose grant detail is not itemized, will not appear.
