01What it does

What Preschool Advantage Inc does

Mission

Preschool advantage provides funding for qualified children to attend our partner preschools.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Preschool assistance: the first years of a child's life are critical to laying the foundation for a lifetime love of learning. Early childhood education sets the stage for future growth and propels children onto their educational paths. Despite the undeniable importance of a solid educational start, many local children have no means to attend preschool. Preschool advantage serves the population of struggling families who do not qualify for government funded programs because they earn above the poverty level, but are still earning below the level of sustainability for our region. These families simply cannot afford the cost of a preschool for their child thus hindering the child's success and opportunities later in life. The lack of sources of assistance for working families unable to support the cost of preschool led to the founding of preschool advantage in morristown in 1995. To date, we have funded almost 2,000 half-day preschool tuitions for just under $1,500 children.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 14 funders to 40 funders, grant income rose $146k → $576k.

12 of 76 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 38% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of PRESCHOOL ADVANTAGE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 76 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

PRESCHOOL ADVANTAGE INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 14% of grant income, and it takes 5 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 5 funders to its left

39% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund PRESCHOOL ADVANTAGE INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.2M arriving through sponsors registered in 11 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
