01What it does

What Paper Fig Foundation Inc does

Mission

The paper fig foundation is the charitable initiative of new york city based event management and production firm ldj productions. Its mission is to empower women and support sustainable community development in africa. Pff provides communities in need with practical, hands-on education and support from a growing group of professionals within the ldj network. Through this process, pff and its partners are working to create sustainable benefits that the injection of financial resources alone cannot produce. Pff's partnership with selected communities and local leadership on the ground is central to its mission and funding. Pff supports a healthcare initiative through it's building and continued funding of the marietta steinberg health center, and women's empowerment and education through a sewing school that teaches women in rural communities the skills necessary to design and fabricate their own garments, or find employment in nearby cities in the textile manufacturing industry. While helping to fulfill its mission, partners and friends of pff are not only transforming the communities they touch, but also shaping their own lives through this shared vision.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Opening in november 2015, the marietta steinberg health care center has a staff of 4 employees and treats an estimated 1,000 patients per year, suffering from malaria, dysentery, tuberculosis, and other treatable illnesses when immediate care is available. The marietta steinberg health care center is located in kihara, which is situated in the rwenzori mountains in uganda.

  2. In november 2015 pff launched a women and girls empowerment program. We believe that the best thing we can do to affect sustainable economic growth is to support educational ventures with special attention paid to encouraging and empowering women. Pff has created a sewing school that teaches women the skills necessary to design and produce their own garments and textiles, which can be sold in the community. Additionally, these skills can be used to find employment in the fashion and textile manufacturing industry in nearby cities, where these skills are valued. The sewing school has a staff of 3 employees and an estimated 100-150 students attend and graduate from the program each year. Additionally, there is a local area supervisor that oversees both programs in uganda.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base held at 2 funders, grant income rose $1k → $12k.

2 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 28% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of PAPER FIG FOUNDATION INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

PAPER FIG FOUNDATION INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 39% of grant income and the top three 97%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

28% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund PAPER FIG FOUNDATION INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 60% · 2019 100% · 2021 100% · 2022 99% · 2023 100% — growing more concentrated.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $18k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
