01What it does

What Oyate Hotanin does

Mission

Our mission is: To lead a movement for the next 500 years that supports a new era of art, healing, and change. Since 2014, we have been amplifying American Indian thought, voices, and perspectives to complete the missing narratives that hamper deep understanding of our society, spark conversations that bridge divides, and spur action that drives transformation. We create, host, and promote artistic events that draw on our history as the first and most powerful stewards of this nation, building a coalition of individuals and communities that use art, laughter, conversation, and collaborative creativity to heal and transform society one story at a time.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. b) b) Repair Community Circles. In 2025 we submitted to Department of Children Families and Youth Restorative Practice Initiative to fund our pilot to move the Oyate Hotanin Family Circle and Victim Offender Conversation Practices from concept to application in Ramsey County for individuals returning from long-term incarceration -- and other individuals and families disrupted by violence, trauma, and incarceration -- to help them on a journey towards reconnection and healing, which, in Dakota understanding, means remembering who we are. The proposal was funded and will begin operation in 2026.

  2. a) a) Society of Mother Earth (S.O.M.E): Connecting Land and People through Indigenous Thought for Climate Rescue. We followed a steady approach to achieve our goals. Monthly meetings of the leadership team gave us the center we needed to follow the path we had laid out for ourselves with this project. In many ways we exceeded our goals in ways that are hard to quantify, but we were moved by the quality of the intentions and people who rose up to join us all along the way. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $40k → $48k.

1 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 24% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of OYATE HOTANIN’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

OYATE HOTANIN leans on a few funders — its largest provides 59% of grant income and the top three 92%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

28% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund OYATE HOTANIN.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 100% · 2019 100% · 2020 65% · 2021 59% · 2022 89% · 2023 63% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Minnesota out of state home

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $165k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
