01What it does

What Outlook-Nebraska Inc does

Mission

To positively impact everyone who is blind and visually impaired. We achieve this through employment and enrichment programs geared toward helping those we serve achieve increased personal independence and employability.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Employment programs -- outlook nebraska has built a self-sustaining business model designed to create employment for people who are visually impaired in manufacturing and administrative roles. Outlook nebraska employs people who are visually impaired throughout the organization; about 52% of our associates have impaired vision and we are the largest employer of the blind in nebraska. Outlook operates a manufacturing facility that produces toilet tissue and paper towels. More than 75% of the workforce engaged in the production of these products is legally blind, qualifying our products for mandatory preferential status for federal government purchase. The employment programs comprise most of the revenue and operating expenses in our financials, primarily driven by the cost of the raw material.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base narrowed from 7 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $309k → $69.

3 of 17 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 5% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of OUTLOOK-NEBRASKA INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

OUTLOOK-NEBRASKA INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 25% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

20% of OUTLOOK-NEBRASKA INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 41% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $45k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
