01What it does

What North Union Farmers Market does

Mission

North Union Farmers Market champions the local foods of northeast ohio and promotes their health, economic and environmental benefits by connecting certified producers with consumers through a network of markets.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. North union's goal is to educate the public about the benefits of eating locally grown food. In addition, the organization strives to improve the regional economy by creating vibrant community spaces and enabling small farms to sell directly to consumers. North union operates nine farmers' markets in the greater cleveland area.

$367,110 spent$171,947 earned by the program
    100% of program spending
  2. Produce perks are incentive tokens given to individuals who use an ohio direction card to purchase only fruits and vegetables. All other tokens purchased with the ohio direction card are good to use on eligible items at the market. North Union Farmers Market matches dollar for dollar (up to 25) spent on an ohio direction card with produce perks in the form of green tokens.

  3. Snap: snap (supplemental nutrition assistance programs), formerly known as food stamps, is the largest program in the domestic hunger safety net, providing nutrition assistance to eligible low-income individuals and families. The ohio direction card (electronic benefit transfer or ebt) is similar to a bank debit card that holds snap benefits assigned each month to the recipient. Snap benefits can be used at the market through the ohio direction card, which is run through the credit card machine. The shopper lets the volunteer know how much money they would like taken from their card, and the shopper is given wooden tokens (1) in return. These can be used on all ebt-eligible items (food) at the market.

  4. The senior farmers market nutrition program distributed about 38,000, which accounts for even more than what was done through snap and produce perks. The senior farmers market nutrition program (sfmnp) is designed to provide low-income seniors with access to fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, while supporting local farmers. Through the program, eligible seniors receive a preloaded card that can be redeemed at participating farmers markets though a third party app. The shopper lets the volunteer at the farmers market table know how much money they would like to take off their card, and the shopper is given silver metal tokens (1/each) in return. These vouchers are issued annually and can be used to purchase a variety of nutritious, in-season produce.

The 4 programs described on its FY2023 Form 990, listed largest first by expense. Program spending in total: $367,110.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base held at 6 funders, grant income rose $74k → $79k.

3 of 21 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 12% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of NORTH UNION FARMERS MARKET’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 20 of 21 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

NORTH UNION FARMERS MARKET leans on a few funders — its largest provides 35% of grant income and the top three 81%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

83% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund NORTH UNION FARMERS MARKET.
